Welcome!

In South Florida, as more land is developed, the already threatened Burrowing Owl population in the state is left with even less habitat. This is something we witnessed ourselves as the area we live in transitioned from mainly open lots to mostly developed over the years. Now many of the remaining vacant lots have at least one nest, and as those lots are built, more birds are forced to try and find new homes.

That is where our story starts. While we have watched nearby nests and were aware that the area we live in has one of the highest Burrowing Owl populations in Florida, it was when a nest across the street was destroyed (legally and with a permit) that we decided to put up the familiar perch and made a starter hole for the Owl’s to create a burrow. Almost immediately the displaced Owls went to work on their new home, allowing us to watch and learn about these unique birds.
